5. Conclusion Wavelength Division Multiple Access on a High-speed Optical Fibre

چکیده
Actual MAC protocols show a lack of performances when dealing with high bit rate networks. On the other hand, WDM multichannel systems will allow for a better use of the huge bandwidth of fiber optic media. In this paper, we introduce a new CSMA/CD protocol for mul-tichannel optical LANs, based on the Ethernet standard. The key issues of this protocol are the network load and the wavelength swapping time. Simulation results show that the number of consecutive collisions before jumping to another wavelength, and the swapping time (laser tuning plus a certain delay), should depend on the network load values. This new CSMA/CD scheme will maximize throughput while keeping an acceptable delay. The proper values of the protocol parameters (the consecutive collisions before wavelength jumping and the swapping time) optimizes the network behaviour in terms of total capacity utilisation. 6. Optical CDMA technology is being explored as a multiplexing technology for high speed access networks, with optical fibre as transmission medium and also processing ie. the spreading/dispreading of the CDMA sequences. For fibre-optic code division multiple access (FO-CDMA) scheme to be a practically implement able one as a high speed access network, two main challenges are, design of (1) codes ...

Single-mode fibres with low loss and a large transmission bandwidth are a key enabler for long-haul high-speed optical communication and form the backbone of our information-driven society. However, we are on the verge of reaching the fundamental limit of single-mode fibre transmission capacity. Therefore, a new means to increase the transmission capacity of optical fibre is essential to avoid ...

Introduction: Remarkable increases in the internet traffic have recently propelled upgrades in the wide-area and metropolitan-area networks employing advanced wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) and time-division-multiplexing (TDM) communication systems. Modern local-area networks (LANs) on the other hand, require less processing at the centre nodes but more flexible high-speed access at the...
متن کاملA Review of MAC Protocols for All-Optical Networks
All-optical networks that employ wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) are an attractive architecture for future high-speed networks. Through WDM, multiple channels are created on a single fiber, and an aggregate network bandwidth far greater than the peak electronic processing speed can be realized. This paper provides a review and an extensive bibliography of proposed media access control (M...

Alongside the spread of the Internet in recent years, high-speed data transmission services for subscriber networks (access networks) have taken root in a real way. This has been accompanied by a growth in fibre-optic communications networks. Fig. 1 illustrates an optical communications network. The core DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical network is connected to LANs (Local A...
